Facility Safety & Security

All facilities feature 24/7 security, fall prevention measures, emergency call systems, fire safety protocols, and secure memory care units. Regular safety assessments maintain the highest protection standards.

Fire Safety and Emergency Preparedness

All facilities on our platform must hold a current fire safety certificate issued by Jabatan Bomba dan Penyelamat Malaysia (JBPM). Requirements include: functioning fire detection systems in all rooms and corridors; automatic fire suppression systems in kitchens; clearly marked and unobstructed fire exit routes; fire extinguishers serviced annually by a certified contractor; and a written fire evacuation plan with designated assembly points.

Fire evacuation drills must be conducted at minimum twice yearly, with documentation of staff participation and lessons learned. Facilities housing residents requiring wheelchair or bed evacuation must demonstrate a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP) for each affected resident. The most recent Bomba inspection certificate must be displayed prominently at the facility entrance.

Fall Prevention and Physical Safety

Falls are the leading cause of serious injury in residential care settings. Our facilities are expected to implement a comprehensive falls prevention programme including:

  • Falls risk assessment on admission for every resident (Morse Fall Scale or equivalent)
  • Environmental audits of all common areas and bedrooms for fall hazards
  • Grab rails installed in all bathrooms, toilets, and along major corridors
  • Non-slip flooring in all wet areas
  • Bed exit alarms for residents assessed as high falls risk
  • Regular footwear checks — residents should wear closed-toe, non-slip footwear
  • Exercise programmes targeting balance and strength, which reduce falls by 23–39%
  • Root cause analysis documented for every fall with injury, with corrective action tracked

Families of high-risk residents are proactively involved in falls prevention planning.

Safeguarding: Protection from Abuse and Neglect

The safety and dignity of every resident is non-negotiable. All facilities on our platform are required to implement a robust safeguarding framework consistent with the Persons with Disabilities Act 2008.

Requirements include: a written safeguarding policy reviewed annually; mandatory safeguarding training for all staff on joining and annually thereafter; a clear process for residents and families to report concerns confidentially; immediate suspension pending investigation of any staff member against whom an abuse allegation is made; and reporting of safeguarding incidents to MOH, JKM, and police as required by law.

Families who observe or suspect abuse or neglect should report directly to JKM (1-800-88-3008, 24-hour hotline) or the police.

Infection Control and Hygiene Standards

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, infection control in residential care settings has received heightened regulatory attention in Malaysia. Our facilities are expected to maintain ongoing compliance with MOH infection prevention and control (IPC) guidelines, including:

  • A dedicated IPC officer or committee for facilities with more than 50 residents
  • Standard precautions in all resident care interactions (hand hygiene, personal protective equipment, respiratory hygiene)
  • Enhanced precautions for residents with known transmissible infections
  • Regular environmental cleaning schedules with EPA-approved disinfectants for high-touch surfaces
  • Mandatory influenza vaccination offered annually to residents and staff
  • HVAC and ventilation systems serviced and documented annually

Families should feel empowered to ask any facility about their current infection rates and IPC audit results.
